Vivian B. Hooks, 99, of Norwich, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Chase Memorial Nursing Home.
Born on September 6, 1924, in Little Falls, NY, Vivian was the daughter of Edward and Helen (Smith) Burns. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Little Falls and continued her education, and received her Registered Nurse certificate from St. Peter’s School of Nursing in Albany, NY.
On August 23, 1947, Vivian married Gerald Hooks at St. Mary’s Church in Little Falls. Her husband, and love of her life, predeceased her on February 17, 2011 after 64 years of marriage. She is survived by her children, Henry (Anne) Hooks, of Niagara Falls and Katherine Hooks, of Norwich; grandchildren, Kathleen Hooks, of Ithaca, NY, Patrick (Catherine) Hooks, of DeWitt, NY, Erin Hooks, of Niagara Falls, NY, Kevin Hooks, of Kyle, Texas, and Meghan (Alan) Mack, of New Braunfels, Texas; daughter-in-law, Susan Hooks, of Ithaca; and sister, Natalie Oberriter, of Roseville, CA. She was predeceased by her son, Edward Hooks, on February 11, 2022, and sister, Corrine Coggins.
Vivian was employed as a registered nurse at Chenango Memorial Hospital for thirteen years. She worked for several years thereafter as a caseworker for Chenango County Department of Social Service Child Protective Services, and later as the administrator for Chenango Valley Home on Canasawacta Street in Norwich, where she later became a resident. Vivian volunteered her time and service on the Advisory Committee of Head Start, was a member of the Norwich Youth Bureau, Civil Service Employees Association, Chenango County Youth Bureau, and the Ladies of Charity. She was also one of the first trained volunteers of Chenango County Hospice. Vivian was communicant of St. Paul’s Church in Norwich.
Vivian and Gerald took pleasure in traveling to Europe, Mexico, and Canada. Their favorite vacations were their frequent trips to the Adirondacks during each of the four seasons.
The family wishes to express gratitude to both the Chenango Valley Home and Apartments and Chase Memorial Nursing Home for the exceptional care and love given to Vivian.
A private Mass of Christian Burial was held for Vivian on Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Church of St. Paul’s, where the Rev. Ralph A. Bove, officiated. Burial will occur in the spring of 2024.
