Vincent Yacono

d. September 24, 2015

Vincent D. Yacono, 90, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, New York.

He was born on October 9, 1924, in New Jersey, and was the devoted son of Daniel and Assunta (Rago) Yacono. Vincent graduated from Norwich High School in 1942 and was soon drafted into the United States Army. He served overseas for 22 months with a hospital unit located in the Pacific Theatre of Operations where he assisted medical officers, surgeons, and nurses with the sick and wounded.

After the war, in 1946, Vincent married the love of his life, Joan A. Spadaro, and soon began construction on their home where they would live together for the next 69 years.

Vincent began his career as a roofing contractor and founded Chenango Roofing and Sheet Metal, Inc., serving as its CEO. He was awarded the roofing construction contracts for countless commercial properties, including malls, hospitals, school districts, churches, and church parish centers throughout the Southern Tier of New York State. Vincent spent many successful and happy years running his business.

His greatest joys in life were securing his children’s education, providing for his family, playing golf on many courses throughout NY state and the east coast, watching WWII movies, listening to Gershwin tunes, finishing a crossword puzzle, and spending time with his beloved wife, Joan, and all of his children, grand children and great-grand children. Vincent also once scored a hole-in-one on the Canasawacta Country Club golf course in Norwich.

Vincent is survived by his loving wife, Joan, his children and their spouses, Joanne (Bill), Infantolino, Judith (Gary) Scarzafava, Daniel Yacono, John (Irma) Yacono, Victoria (Frank) Sarro, and Annette Yacono; eight grandchildren, Dirk (Colleen) Simpson, Stephanie Yacono, John Yacono, Paul Yacono, Angelica (Michael) Iadanza, Christina Scarzafava, Mary Sarro, Frank Sarro; and three great-grandchildren, Mia Simpson, Bree Simpson and Tony Williams; brothers, Robert Yacono, of Norwich, and Frederick Yacono, of Minnesota. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Vincent was predeceased by a son-in law, Ira J. Simpson.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Vincent took place on Friday, September 25, 2015, at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Norwich, officiated by Fr. Ralph Bove, pastor, and assisted by Vincent’s son-in-law and deacon, Frank Sarro. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Contributions in Vincent’s memory may be made to the St. Jude Shrine in Baltimore, MD, or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
