Shirley A. Hooke

March 22, 1929 — July 18, 2018

Shirley A. Hooke, 89, formerly of Monroe, CT, and more recently of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at her residence.

Born March 22, 1929, in Bridgeport, CT, Shirley was the daughter of William and Lucy (Eley) Doar. After graduating from Harding High School in Bridgeport, Shirley married her beloved husband, Eldred Hooke, who died on January 12, 1999. After the birth of their son, Shirley spent the next 16 years at home raising her son and caring for her family and her home. She then began work as an office assistant for OB/GYN Associates, in Bridgeport, CT. Throughout her more than 50 years in Monroe, she was a very active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. She served in the church’s Altar Guild and knitted many, many prayer shawls during those years. She adored the many friends she made in her church, and the town of Monroe. More recently, Shirley decided it was time to be nearer to her son in Norwich, where she relocated in 2017. In Norwich, she became a regular patron of the Ontario restaurant and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Shirley is survived by her son, Edward, and his wife, Sophie Liberatore, of Norwich; step-grandchildren Tricia Holcomb and her husband, Chris, of Raleigh, NC, and Jill Liberatore, of Cambridge, MA; step-great-grandchildren Hunter, Austin, and Stella Holcomb; and nieces Amy Binks, of Shelton, CT, and Kimberly Fitch, of Hudson, FL. She was predeceased by siblings Constance Sherwood, Dorothy Nowak, and William Doar.

A funeral service for Shirley will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 27, 2018 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 175 Old Tannery Rd., Monroe, CT. Burial will immediately follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Daniel’s Farm Rd. in Trumbull, CT. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
