In Loving Memory of Robert La Rue Webb
Robert La Rue Webb, affectionately known as "Bob," "Webby," and the "Gray Ghost," passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Born on June 1, 1934, in Oxford, NY, he was the son of the late Francis and Bertha (Gates) Webb.
Bob's journey through life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and his passions. He grew up in Oxford, graduating from Oxford Academy and Central Schools in 1953, where he laid the foundation for a life filled with remarkable experiences and achievements. But it was on a blind date that fate intervened, bringing him together with the love of his life, Shirley. They embarked on a beautiful journey, culminating in a joyous marriage on June 4, 1955, a partnership that spanned an incredible 68 years.
Among his many roles, serving as the Oxford Police Chief stood as a crowning achievement in Bob's life. His dedication to protecting his community and ensuring its safety was a testament to his character and sense of duty. After retiring, Bob and Shirley settled in Temple, TX, where they continued to nurture their love and create cherished memories together.
Bob's talents were as diverse as they were remarkable. His love for woodworking was evident in the intricate pieces he crafted, each a testament to his creativity and skill. Whether it was crafting, collecting tools and jack knives, or working on cars and trapping, his passions illuminated his life.
Beyond his achievements, Bob's love for the great outdoors was a defining aspect of his essence. He and Shirley traversed landscapes near and far, embarking on adventures that painted the canvas of their journey with vibrant hues of discovery and joy. Bob's endearing knack for bribing his grandchildren with candy in exchange for a back rub added a sprinkle of sweetness to his role as a grandfather, leaving an indelible memory in the hearts of those he loved.
However, Bob's heart shined the brightest when it came to his family. His love for them was unmatched, a source of strength and inspiration for all who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Shirley; his brother, Melvin (Lorraine) Webb; his children, Cheryl Webb and Robert Webb II (Heather); his grandchildren, Heidi (Johnathan) Brou, Mark Bockes, Sean (Brianne) Braley, Tiffany (Nicole) Brec, Taylor (Deepak) Tambe, and Elizabeth Webb; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, each a living testament to his enduring legacy.
Bob's journey is now joined with those who have passed before him, including his parents; a brother, Frances Webb; sisters, Elizabeth (Kenneth) Cole and Carolyn Marvin; and his children, Jonathan Webb, Glen Webb, and Teri Webb-Van Almen.
