Robert A. “Bob” Hall, 93, (aka Popeye) a lifelong resident of Norwich, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at SUNY Upstate University Hospital after a brief illness.
Born January 27, 1927, in Norwich, Bob was the son of Archie and Lucy (Breed) Hall. He attended Norwich City Schools, but prior to graduating Norwich High School, in 1944, Bob enlisted at age 17 in the U.S. Navy to serve during World War II. He served in several major battles in the Pacific theater and was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge, he returned to Norwich and Bob completed his GED in 1947, and began work at the local bowling alley where he took his future wife, Dorothy L’Hommedieu, on their first date. Later, Bob worked at the C & U Telephone Co., then went on to General Laboratory Associates (G.L.A.). He also served as a Deputy Sheriff for Chenango County for a time. His final employer was Procter & Gamble. Bob retired from Procter & Gamble in 1989. After retirement, he enjoyed working as part of the grounds crew for the Canasawacta County Club.
On December 27, 1949, Bob married the love his life, Dorothy. Before Dorothy died, on May 1, 2018, she and Bob would spend 68 wonderful years together. Together they would raise their two children, and then enjoy the company of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For many years later in life, Bob and Dorothy would travel to enjoy the warmth of Myrtle Beach, SC during the winter and spend many summers at Bradley Brook.
Bob was very active in community organizations and activities. He was a member of the Norwich Bowling Association, was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1977, participated in many National ABC Tournaments, and even scored a number of 300 games. Bob was also a talented golfer. He and his guest won the 1991 Canasawacta Country Club annual Member-Guest tournament and was inducted into the Greater Norwich Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. He was the1998 Chenango County Super Senior Amateur Golf Champion and the runner up in 1999. He served as the club’s Golf League Secretary for many years. He also enjoyed volunteering for the BC Open PGA tournament, which he also did for several years. Bob played on the Y Giants football team and the Bluebird softball team. He served for 25 years on the Town of Plymouth Grievance Board. Bob was also a football referee, a Scoutmaster for local Troop #63, and managed a little league baseball team.
Bob also adored his family, and is survived by his sons, Kevin and his wife, Deborah, and Bradley and his wife, Colette; grandchildren, Todd Hall, Scott and Molly Hall, Kiernan and Sean Hamilton, and Karlie and Paul Brandofino; great-grandchildren, Connor and Leah Hall, Matthew, Joey, Nicholas and Ellie Hall, and Ireland, Nellie and Seamus Hamilton; siblings, Harley (Sandra) Hall, of Norwich, and Judith (Robert) Pike, of Edmond, OK; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Bob was predeceased by his siblings, Marion Barr, Donald, Harold, and James Hall.
Bob’s family would like to express their sincere thanks to all of their neighbors who took such great care of our parents and keeping a watchful eye on them over the years.
To honor Bob’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service for Bob will take place in the spring at Valley View Cemetery, 116 Gorge Avenue, South Otselic, NY 13155. Contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
