Mercurio (“Mario”) Chimento, 82, of Hillview Drive, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 14, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer at Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home in Clifton Park, NY, with family by his side.
Born on October 13, 1933, in Alia, Sicily, Italy, Mario was the son of Santo and Josephine Chimento. He studied the art of barbering as an apprentice in Sicily for six years prior to emigrating to the United States at age 18. Mario spent sixty years working as a barber at his own barber shop, Mario’s Barber Shop, in Norwich, before retiring in 2008.
Mario was also a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church. He took great pleasure in gardening and cooking, but his true love was caring for his family. Mario was an avid fan of Italian soccer and Formula One car racing. Throughout his life Mario was known for his lively sense of humor and had an infectious smile that would light up the room.
On February 5, 1966, in St. Bartholomew’s Church, Mercurio married the love of his life, Mary Arico. Mary died on September 8, 2007. Together, Mario and Mary raised a son, John Chimento, who survives with his fiancée Dawn Marie Fountain, of Clifton Park, NY. Mario is also survived by his three grandchildren, Nicholas Michael, John Michael and Logan Mario Chimento. In addition, Mario is survived by his two sisters, Laila and Tina Chimento of Sicily, Italy. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mario will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at the Lady of Sorrows Chapel, St. Paul’s Cemetery, Norwich, NY. Burial will immediately follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
