Mary Wehrli

August 16, 1928 — December 1, 2012

Mary J. Wehrli, 84, formerly of South Plymouth, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Residential Health Care Facility at Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born in Spirit Lake, Idaho on August 16, 1928, Mary was the daughter of Al and Mary Jane (Hadigan) Meeks. She moved to Spokane, Washington at the age of eleven and graduated from Holy Name Academy there. Mary loved children and thus became an elementary teacher, teaching in Washington and then at Otselic Valley in Georgetown. She also taught in Norwich for a couple of years. Many times, while out and about, Mary would get hugs from her former students. Mary also loved to play bridge with her husband, Robert.

A devout catholic, Mary was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church. She volunteered at church as a lector and as a Eucharistic minister as well as teaching Sunday school. Additionally, she started the Marian Movement of Priests at St. Paul’s Church following the adoration there.

On July 27, 1969, in Spokane, Mary married Robert J. Wehrli who died on January 21, 2010. She is survived by her son, Kevin Wehrli and his wife, Erin and two grandchildren, Makenna and Brayden Wehrli, all of Bainbridge. She was predeceased by three brothers, Dan, Robert and Thomas Meeks and a sister, Elizabeth Corkery.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at St. Bartholomew’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 – 7 pm.
