Mary Fern

Mary M. Fern (née Maiurano), aged 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Wake Forest, NC, on August 3, 2024.

Born on November 23, 1939, in Norwich, NY, Mary grew up in a loving family with her parents, Joseph “Pep” and Rose (D'Ambra) Maiurano.

Mary attended Norwich City Schools and graduated from Norwich High School in 1958. On October 8, 1960, Mary married the love of her life, Dick Fern. They spent nearly 64 wonderful years together, building a life centered around family and love. Mary spent years as a stay-at-home mother, focused on caring for her 2 children, as well as many of her nieces and nephews. She later spent a decade working at Guernsey Memorial Library. After retirement in 1998, Mary and Dick moved to Wake Forest NC. Mary’s family was the cornerstone of her life. She found immense joy in being present for her children, grandchildren and extended family. Whether watching soccer games, attending dance recitals, birthday parties, or enjoying Sunday brunches (and mimosas) at her son's restaurant, (ish) Delicatessen, Mary was a constant, unwavering source of love and support. Her warm and genuine presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Mary also had a special place in her heart for the beach, spending many springs at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Mary had an extraordinary talent for finding treasured sand dollars and shells during her walks along the shore, a pastime she cherished.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Dick of Wake Forest NC; her daughter Katie (Chris) Mahan of Richmond, VA; her son Matt Fern of Raleigh, NC; and two beloved granddaughters, Neiley and Hannah Mahan of Richmond VA; as well as her cherished dog and companion, Gypsy. She also leaves behind her brother and sister in-law, Joseph and Dawn Maiurano of Norwich; sisters in-laws Carol Maiurano of Norwich and Joanne Tarbell of Sherburne and many nieces, nephews and their families; and special friend, Carole Gagliano of Auburn. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Rose and Pep Maiurano; sister and brother in-law, Kate and Ken Stewart; sister Rosaria Delmonico; and two brothers, Jim Maiurano and Francis "Pep" Maiurano.

Calling hours will be held at Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich NY on Thursday, August 15, from 6 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew's in Norwich on Friday, August 16, at 1 pm, followed by interment at St. Paul's Cemetery.
