Mark L. Halom, 89, of Norwich, died in his home on Saturday, May 20, 2023 with family by his side.
Born on August 27, 1933, in Beloit, WI, Mark was the son of the late Henry and Elsie (Greenberg) Halom. He graduated from Morse Hills High School in Beloit, WI with the class of 1951 before working in several manufacturing jobs in the Beloit area. While in Beloit, Mark subscribed to a pen-pal magazine and started writing to a girl from Greene, NY. After five years of dedicated letters, Mark traveled to Greene to meet his pen pal, Helen Youngs, who he would later marry on July 30, 1955 in Greene. In 1957, Helen and Mark moved to Norwich where he took a position with the then Norwich Pharmacal Company as a laboratory technician. Mark retired from Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals in 1994 after 37 years of dedicated service.
Mark was very active in the Norwich community including singing in the choir of the Christ Lutheran Church and the committee chairman of the Norwich Jaycees. He also bowled in many local leagues throughout his life. Mark was a huge New York Yankees fan and enjoyed writing poems and song lyrics. He was a later member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich.
Mark is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Helen Halom, of Norwich; children, Doreen Beebe (Ted Earl), of Afton, NY, Audrey (James) Robinson, of Norwich, Chris (Terri) Halom, of Norwich, Brenda (Keith) May, of Norwich, Elliott (Natalia) Halom, of Manchester, NH, and Richard (Elizabeth Kalb) Halom, of Jamestown, NY; grandchildren, Travis Beebe, Austin Beebe, Wesley (Kara DeSanna) Robinson, Dillon Robinson, Carrie (Shane) Thompson, Heather (Rebel) Whitman, Brandy Halom, Michael (Cierra) Halom, Spencer Halom, Hannah Halom, and Kayla May; great-grandchildren; Jordan, Bindi, Ryder, Ember, and Serenity; and dear friend, Mary Rose. Mark was predeceased by his brothers, Lyle (Abbalone Shaw) and Clayton Halom and dear friend, Gordon Rose.
A funeral service for Mark will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the Broad Street United Methodist Church, where the Rev. Mary Rublee, pastor, will officiate. Private burial will occur at Sylvan Lawn Cemetery in Greene, NY.
Contributions in Mark’s memory made be made to the Shriner’s Children Hospital, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the American Cancer Foundation.
