Margaret Rotundo

August 13, 1939 — February 3, 2020

Margaret M. “Peg” Rotundo died on February 3, 2020, at age 80. A longtime Norwich resident, she was the wife of the late Paul J. Rotundo, who preceded her in death in 1985.

Born on August 13, 1939, in Carbondale, PA. Peg was the daughter of Robert E. and Catherine (Krouse) Monaghan. She was always the life of the party. Peg’s home was always open to family and friends. Her favorite activities were cooking and entertaining, and she excelled at both. We will always remember the vibrant sound of her laughter.

Peg had a deep faith in God, and for many years was an active member of St. Paul’s Church, in Norwich. There she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Societies and the Mother’s Club. She was also a life member of the Veterans’ of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a member of the Ladies of the Elks. Peg graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1957, where she was a standout athlete – much to the chagrin of her brother, Tom. He recalled playing softball during gym class one day, and was proud of the home run he’d hit. Peg, playing in another game on the opposite field, walloped a pitch that went much farther than her brother’s. Coach Kurt Beyer, who saw it all, made a comment about Peg being able to out-homer her brother, and Peg never let Tom forget it. Peg was also a very patriotic US citizen and was fond of listening to the music of Broadway musicals.

On July 4, 1964, at St. Paul’s Church, in Norwich, Margaret married Paul Rotundo. Daughter Kathleen arrived the following year, and Maria came along in 1972.

Peg’s career included being a bank teller at NBT, a data entry specialist for GLA, and most recently, a healthcare aide, caring for many patients in the Norwich area. She was justifiably proud of earning her New York State Certified Nursing Assistant license in her later years.

Peggy will be dearly missed by her daughters, Kathleen Chaffee (Barry Conant), of Norwich, and Maria (Jesse) Baker, of FL. She is also survived by her beloved granddaughters, Sydney and Emma; her brother, Thomas (JoAnn) Monaghan, of Albany; sisters, Florence (Rodney) Collins, of OH, and Catherine (Robert) Miller, of PA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Peg was predeceased by her siblings, Robert E. Monaghan Jr. and Mary Jean Monaghan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2020, at St. Paul’s Church, Norwich, where the Rev. Ralph A. Bove, pastor, will officiate. Family and friends are cordially invited to call on Friday at Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place in the springtime at St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Contributions in Peg’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s Church Memorial Fund, 30 Pleasant St., Norwich, NY, or Catholic Charities of Chenango County, 3 O’Hara Dr., Norwich. NY 13815.

Rest in peace, dear mother, grandmother, sister, aunt. And until we meet again, may God always hold you in the palm of His hand.
