Lanny J. Mcaveigh

October 25, 1935 — September 8, 2019

Lanny J. McAveigh, 83, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at the Norwich Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.

Born October, 25, 1935, in Syracuse, NY, Lanny was the son of James and Emona (Thornton) McAveigh. He was a graduate of Newcomb High School, in Newcomb, NY, where he was a star basketball player. Soon after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1955 - 1957 until his honorable discharge. After his naval service, Lanny completed a degree in radiology, then worked as a radiologist for Chenango Memorial Hospital until a medical condition prevented him from doing so.

On September 2, 1956, in Long Lake, NY, Lanny married Lois (Houghton) McAveigh, who died on October 4, 2014. He is survived by his children, Martin H. McAveigh and Karen K. Page each of Norwich; son-in-law, Donald Page of Norwich; grandchildren Kirsten Page, and her husband, Michael Grover, of Sherburne, Sarah Russell, and her husband, Robert, of Virginia, Justin Page, and his wife, Monet, also of Virginia; and six great-grandchildren, Ava, Logan, Alana, Aleeyah, Alyssa, and Hadlee.

Lanny was an avid golfer, and a devoted fan of the NY Mets and Syracuse Orange. He also enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting with his son. He and Lois were very fond of traveling to Colorado, Canada and Maine, and trips to Myrtle Beach, SC to golf. Lanny made sure to travel each August to his hometown celebration, called “Newcomb Days.” After his wife passed, Lanny very much enjoyed having breakfast with his local buddies. He was also an active member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church. He will be fondly remembered for his witty character, and was always ready for a joke. Lanny so loved his family, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Lanny loved the gatherings of his family, and he was a friend to many. His kind and friendly manner had a positive impact on so many and will be missed.

Friends are invited to call at the Broad Street United Methodist Church from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2019. A memorial service for Lanny will immediately follow at the church at 12:00 p.m., where Rev. Rachel Morse, pastor, will officiate. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
