John Anthony Liberatore, 91, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Wilson Medical Center, Johnson City, NY.
John was born August 24, 1929 to Giuseppe and Mary Grace Liberatore in Norwich, NY. He attended Norwich High School where he always enjoyed participating in sports. After high school John joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. Upon returning, he began working with the local phone company where he remained his entire 42-year career. After retirement John was much busier, as he always said. He enjoyed gardening and helping others with their plants, yards, errands, and appointments. He belonged to the local American Legion and VFW. In retirement John loved traveling along the east coast but always made sure to make his kids’ sporting events.
John was a friend to all and created a sense of calming comfort. He was always there supporting anyone in need. John took great pride in his family and never missed an opportunity to say ‘I love you.’ He loved watching his Syracuse Orangemen basketball, spending time with his friends at the casino, enjoying a bowl of ice cream, and spoiling his beloved grand-dogs with cookies and meatballs. He’ll forever be remembered for his kind eyes, genuine spirit, and loving soul.
John is survived by his children, William (Leanne) Liberatore, of Portsmouth, VA, Tricia (Christian) Holcomb, of Raleigh, NC, and Jill Liberatore, of Norwich, NY; grandchildren, Robert, Meghan, John Hunter, Austin, and Stella; great-grandson, Michael; sister, Mary Rose Biviano; many loved nieces and nephews; and long-time friend, Linda Bradford. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brothers Bartholomew, Joachim, and Anthony.
A Mass of Christian Burial for John will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 2021 at the Church of St. Bartholomew, where the Rev. Ralph A. Bove, pastor, will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Thursday, July 15, from 5:00 -7:00 p.m.
Donations may be made in John’s memory to the Home Delivered Meal Program, Chenango County Area Agency on Aging, 5 Court St., Norwich, NY 13815. Or spread his love by doing a good deed, big or small, making someone else’s day better is another way you may honor him.
