Gloria A. Winter, 91, of Norwich, died peacefully at her home on Friday, June 21, 2024.
Born on February 14, 1933, in Massena, NY, Gloria was the only daughter of Lawrence D. and Anabelle (Bordeaux) Baker. She graduated from Catholic elementary school and Canton High School, Canton, NY and attended St. Lawrence University. Gloria was a legal secretary for several years following her college.
On May 14, 1955, in West Bangor, NY, Gloria married Frederick Winter. Together, they would have six children, and Gloria would stay at home and care for her children.
In 1964, the Winter family moved to Oxford after Frederick accepted an accounting position with the Norwich Knitting Mill. Gloria and Fred later moved to North Carolina when Fred was transferred with Champion Products. In retirement, they spent winters in Florida and summers in Clayton, NY. On November 13, 1994, Frederick predeceased Gloria, and she later moved back to Norwich.

Gloria was an accomplished oil painter and had several of her paintings hung on display for viewing in Clayton, NY. She was also a very creative and talented seamstress, quilter and embroiderer. She was a true lover of all things artistic and continued to draw and paint all of her life. She also learned how to fly fish later in life and truly enjoyed fishing in the Adirondacks.
Gloria volunteered for 40 years in the jail ministry program starting in Norwich, and later traveling to jails across New York State. She touched the lives of countless men and women until she “retired” from jail ministry at the young age of 86. Gloria was commonly referred to as “Grandma Glo” and loved to spend time with her family. She loved playing cards and could beat anyone at Scrabble!
