Frank C. Wierzbicki, 90, formerly of Norwich, passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at the NYS Veterans’ Home, in Oxford.
Born on October 12, 1930, in Brooklyn, Frank was the son of Joseph and Stella (Czekay) Wierzbicki. After graduating from St. Francis Preparatory High School in 1949, Frank began work as a payroll specialist for the Equitable Life Insurance Company. Soon after, in 1951, Frank was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served there in a medical triage (MASH) unit. He was eventually promoted to the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1953. When Frank returned home, he returned to Equitable where he would work his entire career. It was at Equitable that Frank would also meet his future wife, Virginia (Faye) Wierzbicki. They married on June 6, 1959, at Good Shepherd Church, in Brooklyn, and would spend 55 wonderful years together before Virginia’s death on June 24, 2014.
During his time in New York City, and to pay for his children’s college, Frank worked evenings as an usher at Shea Stadium, the home of his beloved Mets, Madison Square Garden, and the venue of the U.S. Open.
After his retirement, in 1993, Frank and Virginia began spending time in Norwich and, in 1994, would permanently settle there. Frank was a member of St. Paul’s Church and the American Legion Post 189. He also very much enjoyed bowling and playing bingo in Sherburne. Frank volunteered at the NYS State Veterans’ Home, in Oxford, where he would act as the caller during bingo games there. It was at the veterans’ home where he would spend the last four years of his life.
Frank dearly loved his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter Lisa Johnson, DVM, and her husband, Bill, of Edmeston, and son, Chris Wierzbicki, and his wife, Allison, of Queens, NY; and grandchildren, David, Rebecca, and Daniel Johnson, and Christopher Buonincontri. Frank was predeceased by his brother, Joseph.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Frank will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 2021, at St. Paul’s Church, where the Rev. Ralph A. Bove, pastor, will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date in New York City. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Sunday, September 26, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The wearing of facial coverings by callers who remain unvaccinated is required.
