Ernest F. Schraft

Ernest F. “Ernie” Schraft, 87, a lifelong Norwich resident, passed away in the NYS Veterans’ Home at Oxford, NY on Saturday, November 18, 2023.


Born in Norwich on June 14, 1936, he was the son of Edward and Gladys (Roberts) Schraft. While in High School, he excelled in sports, playing football, baseball, and basketball and was a graduated of Norwich High School in 1953.


Ernie had a long career as a postal carrier in the City of Norwich and knew many residents from his walking routes over the years. He was married to Shelvy (Brooker) Schraft for 62 years and was well liked throughout the community.


He is survived by his wife, Shelvy; children, Ernest (Lisa) Schraft, Jr., and Catherine (Wayne) Carpenter; grandchildren, Zachary, Cody, Stacey, Kristin, and Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Deacon, Brayliana, David, Aydrielle, Carter, Ivan, and Aiden; brother-in-law, Ron Brooker; sister-in-law, Shirley Whaley; sisters, Betty Davis and Carol Spalluto; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Norma Schraft; and son, William Eric Schraft.


Ernie was a devoted and loving husband and father. He served his country proudly in the United States Marines Corp. from 1954-1957.


The family would like to thank the staff at the NYS Veterans’ Home for their exceptional care. Contributions in his memory may be made to the NYS Veterans’ Home, 4207 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830.


A private burial service will occur in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Wilson Funeral Home.
