David A. Carnachan, 70, of Norwich, died in the comforts of his home on Monday, August 12, 2024, with family by his side. 

Born on May 30, 1954, in Troon, Scotland, David was the son of the late James and Anne (Kelly) Carnachan. At the age of five, with his family, David relocated to Norwich. As a youth, he was a dedicated Boy Scout which continued through his High School years. He graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1973. Starting at a young age, he was always seen working, whether it was delivering papers, working at the Norwich Colonia Theater or Woolworths all before heading to college. David earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Mohawk Valley in 1975 where he then enlisted and served in the United States Air Force until 1992 with a specialty in Security Detail until his honorable discharge. He even had the privilege of providing security to former President George H.W. Bush. David returned home and pursued a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Oneonta in psychology, and his master’s degree from Marywood University in Social Work. David worked for Catholic Charities while attending SUNY Oneonta and Marywood. He then transitioned to Chenango County in the Social Services Department as a social worker – a career in which he thrived on. He later worked for CIT in Norwich in the same capacity until his retirement in 2011. 

He enjoyed golfing, car repairs, and could often be found tinkering in his garage. David was an avid reader of the Bible, enjoyed watching “The Chosen” and loved God. He was a dedicated family man and loved being a “PAPA.”

On June 12, 1976, at St. Paul’s Church in Norwich, David married Debra Chan, who survives. He is also survived by his children; Jennifer Carnachan, Amanda and Mark (Hicks), and Katlyn Carnachan (Daniel Dunham), all of Norwich; grandchildren; Brianna Carnachan (Esteban Rojas), MacKenzie Carnachan, Kelsie Hicks (Dylan Carpenter), Michael Hicks, Mikayla Hicks, Quincy Carnachan, Sophie Carnachan, Cameron Carnachan, Desmond Carnachan; his daughter-in-law, Casey Carnachan; siblings, Roz (Greg) Grosvenor, Scott (Kelley) Carnachan, and Kathleen Carnachan; his sister-in-law, Doris Carnachan; many nieces and nephews; and dogs, Akeela and Brodie. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher Carnachan in 2020 and his brother, Francis Carnachan in 2022. 

A celebration of life will be held at the VFW Post 2782, 61 East Main St, Norwich, NY 13815 on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chris Carnachan Memorial Scholarship, c/o NBT Bank, 52 South Broad Street, Norwich, NY 13815. 

Final arrangements have been entrusted with John Antonowicz of the Wilson Funeral Home.
