Darlene A. “Darby” Gates, 73, of Morris, died on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at her residence. 

Born on April 7, 1951, in Binghamton, NY, Darby was a daughter of the late Chester and Eleanor (Chapman) Sherwood. She attended school in Windsor, NY and later worked in several businesses in the Binghamton region before becoming a loving wife and mother of three boys. Most recently, she worked as a clerk for her husband’s bat removal business.

On August 23, 1980, in Oxford, NY, Darlene married William Edward “Ed” Gates, who survives. 

Darby enjoyed candle making, gardening, and fishing. She loved her family and getting together for family gatherings. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Scott Jones, of Morris, and Mike Jones, of Morris; four grandchildren; siblings, Dan (Maria) Sherwood, Karen (Keith) Maclohne, Janice Nickerson, Debbie (Kim) Sifinstine, Maryann (Mark) Burchett, and Johnny (Barbara) Sherwood; mother-in-law, Araminta Fravel; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her son, William Daniel “Danny” Gates, in 2021, and her brother-in-law, Steve Nickerson.

A funeral service for Darlene will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the Wilson Funeral Home, 68 South Broad Street, Norwich, where the Rev. Mary Rublee, will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, Thursday, October 17, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Burial will occur in Mt. Hope Cemetery. 

Funeral arrangements are entrusted with John Antonowicz of the Wilson Funeral Home.
