Catherine H. Corey

Catherine H. Corey, 101, of Eaton Avenue, passed away at her residence on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

Born on April 22, 1920, in Luzerne, PA, Catherine was the daughter of Ernest and Hannora (Caveney) Hughes. She was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Scranton, PA. Catherine moved to Norwich in 1938 and began doing housework for local residents. On May 5, 1941, at St. Paul’s Church, in Norwich, she married James H. Corey, Jr., who died on April 15, 1988. She and her husband raised eight children. After their youngest child began kindergarten, Catherine began working in the kitchen of Perry Browne School, which she continued until her retirement in 1982.

Outside of work and child rearing, Catherine enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, reading, and gardening. Her extended family were the recipients of over 30 quilts she made over the years. She also enjoyed adventures to St. Martinique, Hawaii, and Florida. Later in life, in her 80’s and 90’s, Catherine toured a submarine, rode in a helicopter, and rode on a motorcycle.

Catherine is survived by her children James III (Carol Jean), of Norwich, Michael (Diana), of Calabash, NC, Catherine Hood, of GA), Richard (Kathy), of Norwich, David (Kay), of Sherburne, and Barbara Corey-Edick, of Norwich; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sarah Corey, of Alaska, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Dubois, and her husband, Dan; son, Robert; and siblings, Frances Hughes, James Hughes, Veronica Green, Mary DeGraeve, and Helen Merritt.

A graveside service for Catherine will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery on Thursday, May 5, 2022, with a time to be announced. There will be no calling hours.
