Carmela M. Doyle

February 1, 1922 — April 13, 2020

Carmela M. “Carm” Doyle, 98, a Norwich native, died on Monday, April 13, 2020 at Chenango Memorial Hospital after complications from a fall. Born on February 1, 1922, in Norwich, Carm was the daughter of Carmelo and Amelia DiStefano, who had migrated to the US from Italy. She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister, Thomas, Tony, and John DiStefano, and Santa DiStefano-Sastri.

Carm attended St. Paul’s School and Norwich High School. She worked for a short time for the Norwich Knitting Mill and NBT Bank, but made her career with the Norwich Pharmacal Co. as secretary and supervisor of the Medical Department. Carm retired in June of 1983.

On December 6, 1946, Carm married her devoted husband, George R. Doyle, who passed away in 1996. They had two children, John P. Doyle and his wife Marsha, of TX, and Barbara J. Lawton and her husband, Edward, of Norwich, each of whom survives. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Keith (Lisa) Lawton, of Oxford, Kevin Lawton, of Norwich, Mary Belrose, of Albany, Elizabeth Doyle, of Albany, Michael Doyle, of TX, Brian Doyle, of Albany; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Carm was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church, and was involved in many of its groups throughout the years. She was always an active member of the Ave Maria/Rosary Society until the time of her death. Carm devoted her life to family, friends, and her religious faith. She was always a very organized individual and strove for perfection. Carm was also a talented knitter, which she learned from her co-workers on her lunch breaks while working at the Pharmacy. She knitted various glorious articles of clothing for many family members. Later in life, Carm very much enjoyed completing word searches. Her biggest attribute, though, was her special smile and compassionate manner towards everyone. She will be missed.

Barbara and Ed wish to thank the EMTs, doctors, nurses, and staff at Chenango Memorial Hospital, and many thanks to our family, friends, and Blueox family for all the kind words through email or phone calls.

A private committal service for Carm will take place at St. Paul’s Cemetery on Friday, April 17. A memorial Mass will take place at the Church of St. Bartholomew at a later date, to be followed by a reception.

Contributions in Carm’s memory may be made to the St. Bartholomew Capital Campaign Fund, 30 Pleasant St., Norwich, NY 13815. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Wilson Funeral Home. To leave the family a message of condolence, please visit: www.wilsonfh.com
