Bernard Finnegan

Bernard F. Finnegan, 88, of Norwich, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born June 16, 1925 in Wilkes Barre, PA, Bernie was the son of Leo and Mary (Brennan) Finnegan. He graduated from G.A. R. High School in Wilkes Barre and then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was honorably discharged in 1950. Bernie later came to Norwich to visit relatives and decided to stay. He joined the workforce at the former C & U Telephone Company and remained with them for thirty-two years, retiring from Frontier Communications.

Bernie played baseball with the town team and also with the Blue Bird softball team. He was an accomplished pitcher. He also bowled for several years.

In 1953 at St. Paul’s Church, Bernie married his wife of sixty years, Vida Carson Finnegan, who survives. He is also survived by three sons, Bernard F. Finnegan, Jr. (Robin) of Adams, MA, James Finnegan of Norwich and Kevin (Dawn) Finnegan of Oxford; his brother, Thomas (Bunny) Finnegan of Kingston, PA; two sisters, Mary Williams of Wilkes Barre, PA and Sally Davidson of Stillwater, NY; three grandsons, Tim, Andy and Ricky of Norwich and six granddaughters, Megumi, Nicole, Kristen, Casey, Brennan and Ryan as well as great granddaughter Candace Atwell. He was predeceased by two brothers, his twin, Leo Finnegan and Frank Finnegan.

It was Bernie’s request that there be no formal funeral services or calling hours.
