Barbara J. Higley

Barbara J. “Barb” Higley, 95, lifelong Norwich resident, passed away after a brief illness on March 31, 2022 at Wilson Memorial Hospital, in Johnson City.

Barbara was born on March 19, 1927, the daughter of Anthony and Mary (Jones) Meyer. She graduated from Norwich High School in 1945, and Fredonia College in 1949. Barb had a brief teaching career before returning to Norwich and marrying Frank Z. “Tex” Higley, in 1951. Tex predeceased her in 2004.

Barb led an active life and enjoyed tennis and golf up until her early 90’s. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Over the years, Barb was active in many local charities and organizations, including Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Monday Evening Musical Club, Norwich Garden Club, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Chenango Valley Home, and DAR.

Barb is survived by her three children, Frank Higley Jr., and his wife, Virginia, of Mendham, NJ, James Higley, and his wife, Robyn, of Florham Park, NJ, and Sandra Stenman, and her husband, Richard, of Norwich; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Telesky, Kimberly (Brett) Schildhorn, Katherine (Brad) Okonak, Kyle Higley, Laura (Brad) Rosofsky, Sarah Higley, and Andrew Higley; seven great-grandchildren; and her loving companion, Howard Adams, of Earlville. Barb was predeceased by her brother, Howard Meyer.

A memorial service for Barb will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where the Very Rev. Steve White, pastor, will officiate. Inurnment will occur in the church columbarium immediately thereafter. Contributions in Barb’s memory may be made to one’s favored charity.
