Annette E. “Nettie” Smith, 88, of Norwich, died peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2024.
Born on November 24, 1935 in Greene, NY, Annette was a daughter of the late Thorold J. and Elvira (Stewart) Smith. Nettie graduated from Binghamton North High School in 1954 and then attended SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Cortland where she earned a degree in social work. Starting out in her career, she worked at the Binghamton State Hospital as a social worker and later the Norwich City School District in the same capacity. She also attended Syracuse University and the University of London. In 1958, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Hartwick College and in 1974 her master’s degree from Colgate University. Annette finished her career as a principal of the Sherburne-Earlville School District until her retirement in 1990.
In her spare time, Annette enjoyed golfing, playing Bridge, and loved cardinals. She was a member of the ZONTA, American Association of University Women, the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, and the School Administrators Association of New York State. In retirement, she worked part time at the First Edition Book Store and McLaughlin’s Department Store. Annette was a resident of the Chenango Valley Home for several years where she served as Resident Council Representative. She also was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Annette was predeceased by her two brothers, Stewart Smith and Thorold Smith; and nephews, Gary Smith, Terri Smith and James Smith. She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to their step-mother, Janet, who went above and beyond taking care of Nettie while most other family members lived out of town.
Appreciation is also given to the Chenango Valley Home and Chenango Memorial Hospital Nursing Home during her years there.
A private burial will occur in the South Street Cemetery, Triangle New York. Contributions in memory of Annette may be made to the Chenango Valley Home, 24 Canasawacta Street, Norwich, NY 13815.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Wilson Funeral Home.
