Angelo F. “Muzzy” Muserilli, 95, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2022, at Chenango Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born on February 11, 1927, in Norwich, NY, Muzzy was the son of Antonio and Agatina (Ponturo) Muserilli. He attended the Norwich City schools. At the of age 17, Muzzy enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the U.S.S. Bryce during World War II. After the war, he returned home to work, but then re-enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. During the Korean War, Muzzy eventually began serving as a postal clerk. After many years of service and being honorably discharged from service, he would carry his postal duties into private life as a postal clerk for the United States Postal Service, where he worked for over 30 years before his retirement. On November, 27, 1954, in Great Bend PA, Angelo married Hazel (Hafele) Muserilli. Together they raised five wonderful children.
Muzzy and his wife were very active and social in the Norwich community. Muzzy was a communicant of St. Bartholomew’s Church, an active member of Elks Lodge #1222, and a participant of the Elks Club Bowling League. While Muzzy was a boxing champion in the U.S. Navy and an all-around gifted athlete, those who knew Muzzy knew he had a particular love and gift for the game of golf. He was an active member of the Canasawacta Country Club, and could be found on the course for many tournaments and friendly rounds of golf. Winning the 1993 Senior Golf Club Championship tournament, and his induction into the Greater Norwich Golf Hall of Fame, brought special recognition and joy to Muzzy. For over 25 years, Muzzy would travel for many IBBB tournaments - a private USA/Canadian league. A giving man, sharing his passion for the sport, Muzzy donated his time to sharing that passion with community youth through mentorship and complimentary lessons at the Norwich Family YMCA. Muzzy continued sharing his gift for golf with his loving son, Thomas, also a skilled and avid golfer, by his side in good tradition. Muzzy assisted the head coach of the Norwich Varsity Golf Team for many years, and even owned a golfing range in Norwich. He and his wife would host the Norwich High School Varsity Golf Team’s annual team-bonding gathering at their home on Wheeler Avenue. The two would also host annual dinners for the YMCA’s Gus Macker 3-v-3 tournament the night before the tournament began. Above all else, Muzzy adored spending time with his family and friends. Muzzy’s humor and wit gave many of his friends and children’s friends tons of laughs. He was always willing to give you the shirt off his back if that’s what it took to make someone happy.
Muzzy is survived by his cherished children, Kathleen Perkins, Thomas Muserilli (Suzanne Ogden), Christine Muserilli (John Kozersky), and daughter-in-law, Jane Muserilli (Charles), and Jamie; grandchildren, Deanna Parsons (Dave), Jessica Campbell (Raquel), Rebecca Campbell, Joseph Muserilli (Katie), Erin Shortell (Westbrook), Nicholas Muserilli (Lisa), Katie Weiselberg (Chuck) and Lauren Brunza; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Avery, Addison, Alexa, Andreanna, A’Miyah, Charles, Henry, Josephine, and Isaiah.
