Albert A. “Al” Mirabito passed away at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family on Friday, December 15, 2023. He was 94 years old.
Al was born on April 13, 1929, in North Tonawanda, NY, and as a young child moved to Norwich with his family. He attended Norwich Schools before he joined the United States Navy at age 17. While in the Navy, he was stationed on four carriers and worked on airplane engines. Following his honorable discharge, he came back to Norwich and worked at Smith Ford and on the railroad. In 1953, Al began a career with the former General Laboratories Associates in Norwich. Following several company name changes, Al retired from the company in 1989.
On October 14, 1950, at the Church of St. Bartholomew’s, Al married the love of his life and best friend, Eleanor E. Aldrich, who predeceased him on November 11, 2023.
Al enjoyed his retirement lifestyle including spending 19 years in Florida during the winter. He bowled in several local leagues, both singles and couples, and enjoyed playing golf. He also liked hunting and tinkering around his property. Al could often be found in his woodworking shop where he loved making furniture for his family.
Al is survived by his sons, Paul (Mary) Mirabito, of Norwich, and Dean (Eleanor Pepper) Mirabito, of Schenectady, NY; grandchildren, Christa (Robert Brown) Mirabito, Brian (Robin) Mirabito, Nicole (Brian Maricle) Cole, Kathleen (Bobby) Mikalunas, Donny (Melissa) Lawrence, Cheyenne (Rod) Klimek, and Bechet (Craig) Adriance; eighteen great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Adelaide Aldrich; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Rose (LoPiccolo) Orbin; grandson, Ornette Mirabito; great granddaughter, Taylor Cole; and sister, Concetta (Jesse) Lasswell.
Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, on Friday, December 22, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with a funeral service to immediately follow, where Deacon David Kirsch, will officiate. Memorial contributions in Al’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692. Burial will be held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in the spring of 2024.
