Obituary

On Saturday September 21, 2019, Jean Miller Powers, loving mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 92 in Brunswick, Maine with family and friends by her side.

Jean was born on September 28, 1926 in South Paris, Maine to Alan and Verna Mae (Hoyt) Miller. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Easton, Maine and then Presque Isle High School where she was the Vice President of her class. She graduated in 1944. Jean attended the University of Maine and then the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated in 1946. It was in Boston that she met the love of her life, Robert Powers. They were married on September 1, 1947.

Jean and Bob made their home Norwich, New York where they raised their five children. A devoted Catholic, she was a member of the St. Paul’s School Mother’s Club and St. Paul’s Church Choir. Jean always enjoyed baking and was known for generously supplying Christmas cookies to all the neighbors. She loved to sew and craft and made many blankets for her grandchildren. She dearly loved everything Maine, especially the seashore. So, in 1978, Jean and Bob moved to Brunswick, Maine. Here, she supported Bob in his new business and became active in the St. John’s Parish. Those who knew Jean remember her as a cheerful and caring lady. Nothing made her happier than having family and friends gather at the family cottage in Martinsville, Maine.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, Robert, her daughter, Alison Powers, and her granddaughter, Melissa Powers. She is survived by her son Robert Powers and his wife Karen of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, her son Paul Powers and his wife Susan of Schodack Landing, New York, her daughter Patrice Powers of Brunswick, Maine and her daughter Leah Hupper and husband Brian of Tenants Harbor, Maine. She is also survived by her grandchildren Alexandra Andé, Elizabeth Powers, Emma Powers, Katherine Ashby, Mia Powers, Matthew Powers, Robert Haley, Krista Haley, and Olivia Hupper, and her great grandchildren Autumn, Gracelyn, Charles, Benedict, Evelyn, Jordan, Caleb, Ethan, Allanah, and Allyson, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, and her very special friends, Nancy Morin and Peggy Sullivan.

A memorial service was held at Brackett Funeral Home,. Brunswick, Maine on Thursday September 26. An internment service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at 2:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Oxford, New York.

The family would like to thank the staff of Costal Shores and CHANS hospice for all of the loving care they gave Jean. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donation to be made to CHANS Home, Health & Hospice, 60 Baribeau Dr., Brunswick, Maine 04011.
