Obituary for Antonio Nicastri

Antonio (“Tony”) Nicastri, 85, of Norwich, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City with his family by his side.

He was born January 4, 1930 in Carini, Sicily, the son of Andrea and Giuseppa Nicastri. In his early years Tony was in the grocery business in Palermo, Sicily. On May 28, 1955 Antonio married Girolama "Mimi" Ruffino in Carini. Together they enjoyed 60 wonderful years of life together. In 1971 Tony decided to make the move to America where his family could have a better life. They lived in Brooklyn until 1974 where he worked for a construction company and then moved upstate to be closer to family. Tony and his family opened Nina’s Pizzeria in Norwich in the summer of 1975 and successfully operated that business for more than 35 years. Nina’s was considered one of Norwich's best restaurants. They always took great pride in Nina’s and loved to see all of their friends and family there.

Tony loved working in his garden, trimming his trees, making wine to share with his family and always enjoyed a good family meal. He will surely be missed by all.

Tony is survived by his loving wife, "Mimi"; daughter, Josephine Mirabito and her husband Michael; son, Andrew Nicastri and Jessica; grandson, Michael Cooper; granddaughter, Maria G. Mirabito; and grandson, Angelo J. Mirabito. He is also survived by two brothers and their wives in Carini, Sicily, and a sister in Torino, Italy. In addition to his parents, Tony was predeceased by his youngest brother, Giuseppe Nicastri, who resided in Brooklyn, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Tony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at St. Bartholomew’s Church with Rev. Ralph Bove, pastor, officiating. Burial will immediately follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in memory of Tony may be made to the Capital Campaign of St. Bartholomew’s Church, 81 East Main Street, Norwich, NY 13815.
