Dorothy B. Stratton, 93, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Chenango Memorial Hospital’s Residential Health Care Facility.
Born February 14, 1925, in Locustdale, PA, Dorothy was the daughter of Thomas and Anna (Marmus) Steveskey. She was one of eight children. The family relocated to Binghamton later where Dorothy would attend school. Later, and before marrying, she worked on a farm in Bainbridge, then waitressed in Sidney. On April 26, 1943, Dorothy married Horace Sperry, who died April 12, 1960. She would then marry Albert Stratton on January 7, 1961, who preceded Dorothy in death on October 14, 1997.
Dorothy worked for Norwich Knitting Mills, which later became Champion Products, Inc. After working there for 32 years, Dorothy retired as a machine operator in 1988. In her spare time, she loved to tend to her flower garden. She was also a communicant and active member of St. Bartholomew’s Church, and a member of the Ave Maria Guild. For the last 12 years, Dorothy was a resident of Graceview Manor, where she met many new friends.
Dorothy is survived by her children Shirley (Don) Ward-Handy, of Gloversville, Donna (Roy) Dickson, of Johnson City, Richard (Paula) Sperry, of Troy, and Robert (Karin) Sperry, of Hope Mills, NC; 23 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; step-son Albert (Jean) Stratton, of Las Vegas, NV; step-daughter-in-law Sharon Stratton, of Oxford; sister Eleanor Beaudette of Endwell; and sister-in-law Nancy Steveskey of Auburn. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews including; Amos (Sandra) Finch of Walton, John Sperry of Norwich, Carole Beaudette of Endwell, and Linda Steveskey of Dover, DE. She was predeceased by her stepson William Stratton; step-grandson Charles Stratton; and brothers Edward, John, William, Charles, Albert, and Joseph Steveskey.
Dorothy loved her family dearly and was a good friend to all.
A Memorial Mass for Dorothy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2018, at St. Bartholomew’s Church, where Rev. Ralph A. Bove, pastor, will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery, in Oxford. There will be no calling hours.
