Obituary for Barbara M. Eldred

Barbara M. Eldred, 91, of Norwich passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Born March 29, 1926, in Norwich, Barbara was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Bush) Baulf. She graduated with the Norwich High School Class of 1944. Barbara spent her entire career in the food preparation and service industry, first as a cook for M.H. Fishman Co.’s store, then as a cook at Gibson Primary School. Barbara then moved to St. Paul’s (Holy Family) School to serve as its cafeteria manager. She completed her food service work as the cafeteria manager at Chenango Memorial Hospital, having retired in 1986. Barbara was also a communicant of St. Paul’s Church.

On November 7, 1988, in Norwich, Barbara married Frank C. Eldred, who died in 2004. She and Frank very much enjoyed spending winters during their retirement in Florida. Barbara was also a very talented cook, and found great pleasure in making her delicious cookies and rolls for her family. She loved her family gatherings at the family’s backyard pool, and was fond of swimming in her pool and home and later at the Norwich YMCA. One could also find Barbara relaxing with a good book to read or by completing crossword puzzles.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Kathleen Restrepo and her husband, Marcos, of Norwich; granddaughter Jennifer Scheuer and her husband, Brian, of Norwich; grandson Thomas L. Tyler Jr. and his wife, Marianne, of Virginia Beach, VA; daughter-in-law Deborah Tyler, of Norwich; great-grandchildren Emma and Collin Scheuer; several step-children, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Barbara was predeceased by her first husband Louis Tyler, second husband George Huggins, son Thomas L. Tyler Sr., granddaughters Maria and Alicia Restrepo, and sister Beverly Waffle.

A graveside service for Barbara will be held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in the spring of 2018. There will be no calling hours.
