Why Choose a Family- and Locally-Owned Firm?Downtown Norwich

The Wilson Funeral Home is part of your community

The funeral profession, like many American Industries, has a long and proud history of personal service provided by families with deep roots in the local community, and a deep commitment to upholding professional standards.  Some of the oldest, continuously operated businesses in the country are family-owned funeral firms.

What's in a name?

Today, as in many industries, the funeral profession has seen the emergence of national, and even international funeral service conglomerates.  But unlike other industries, these conglomerates rarely promote their presence.  Often, there isn't even a name change.  And that makes it difficult for you, as a consumer, to distinguish a conglomerate-owned funeral firm from a locally-owned firm.  Without asking, you might never know if the funeral directors you may have come to know and trust continue to make the day-to-day decisions that affect your family when you need the services of a funeral home.  For instance, it might surprise you to learn that the other funeral  home in Norwich is owned by SCI Corp., a multi-national, shareholder-owned corporation headquartered in Houston, TX, which owns over 2,200 funeral homes and cemeteries in 43 states and four countries.

A Singular Focus

All of our attention is devoted to making our funeral home the best it can be in terms of satisfying the needs of our friends and neighbors.  We are neither distracted nor bound by corporate mandates.  Rather, we are more flexible, and so more responsive, to your needs.

Local Pride

This is our local business, in our hometown.  We are proud of our staff, and regularly complete continuing education to maintain the highest level of professional services.

A Long-Term Commitment

It's very important for the staff of the Wilson Funeral Home to not only fill your current needs, but to build a relationship so you will return to us in the future.  We have a long-term commitment to this community; this is where we live -- and plan to stay.  When you need us, we'll be here.

A Focus on Families, not Profits

Funeral homes owned by large corporations are answerable to executives and shareholders.  We only answer to you.  In our locally-owned company, there is no pressure from the corporate headquarters in Texas, for instance, to increase profits.  Rather, we understand that our business will do well when we serve you well.

Knowledge of Local Customs

Funeral traditions vary greatly around the country.  We have a fine appreciation of local customs and expectations because we have lived in this community for years.  On the other hand, the staff and management assigned to a funeral home by a national company may be from another area, or may not be around for long.  And that can create a lack of awareness and sometimes disappointment when expectations are not met.  Even if such staff are located locally for the long-term, they still must abide by corporate mandates.

Wilson Funeral Home Invests in the Community

Just as you do, we turn to our neighbors for services and products.  Whenever possible, we choose to do business with other locally-owned and operated businesses. We also support and spend times volunteering for many local charities, schools and other community efforts.

It's Nice to Know Who You're Working With

If you're like most people, you find it's more pleasing to work with a small company.  You like the flexibility, responsiveness and the personal service you can get when you can talk directly with the owner.  We feel the same way!

Service that Exceeds the City (or State) Limits

The Wilson Funeral Home is locally-owned, but not locally limited.  As members of national and state associations and networks, we can assist your family in the event a death occurs away from home.  This is made even easier, of course, when arrangements have been made in advance.

Immediate Need

If you have immediate need of our services, we're available for you 24 hours a day.

Obituaries & Tributes

It is not always possible to pay respects in person, so we hope that this small token will help.

Pre-Arrangement

Dying is one of the few events in life that's certain to occur, yet one we rarely plan for. Should we spend more time preparing for a two week vacation than we do our last days on Earth?
