Marianne Robertson, 97, formerly of Holiday Florida, and Chenango Valley Home in Norwich, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 9, 2010 in the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Stuttgaart, Germany on December 28, 1912, Marianne was the daughter of Karl and Anna (Illenberger) Merkle. She immigrated to the United States in 1922 and received her schooling in Missouri and Brooklyn, NY.
On October 5, 1940, in the Methodist Church in Richmond Hill, NY, Marianne married George T. Robertson who died in 1970. Marianne became a naturalized citizen on August 30, 1943.
While living in Florida, Marianne volunteered for over 30 years as a classroom and library aide at Anclote Elementary School in New Port Richey, Florida. She was awarded state wide recognition for her years of service in 1995, RSVP 2001 Outstanding Volunteer from Anclote, and in the 2006-2007 the elementary year book was dedicated to her. The children called her “Miss Marianne” and she loved them. She was happiest working with and talking proudly about her friends, the staff, and other volunteers at school.
Remembered as a quiet individual, Marianne enjoyed reading and knitting, and collecting art objects of pottery and wood. She was a dependable neighbor and loving friend.
Marianne is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Gail and Jim Sergio of Oxford and Lynn and Richard Busch of Brooklyn; a grandson, Robert H. Benton III and his wife, Stacy and a great grandson, Nicholas Sean Benton, all of Fairview Heights, IL. Also surviving are two nieces, a nephew, and their families.
It was Marianne’s request that there be no calling hours or funeral services. Burial will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens, NY.
Persons wishing to make donations in memory of Marianne may send them to the Chenango Valley Home, 24 Canasawacta Street, Norwich, NY or to the RHCF of Chenango Memorial Hospital.

It is hard to mourn a life fully lived. She saw so much during her lifetime, in two countries, through so much history. My deepest sympathies for your loss. Cherish your memories and take comfort in knowing how many lives she influenced during her time here with you.
Much love,
Emily
I knew Marianne from her years volunteering at Anclote Elementary as I am a teacher there. Marianne always had a genuine smile and a kind word for everyone. She took great pride in the work she did at school. The faculty, staff and students all loved Miss Marianne. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
I had the great pleasure of knowing Marianne for many, many years while she volunteered at Anclote. She was a faithful “employee” who came to work every day from Monday through Thursday, never took a break, never took lunch and never got paid except for the hugs and love she received from the children and staff. We both are silver jewelry lovers and we admired each others pieces over the years. It was a sad day when she left Anclote and the Media Center was never the same. She left a great legacy of love and devotion to her children and all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Marianne and I’m sure the books in heaven will be organized better very soon!
