Gerald B. “Jerry” Weaver, 92, of Locust Street, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born July 13, 1917 in Oxford, Jerry was the son of Arthur and Gladys (Jones) Weaver. He attended school in Oxford and then worked at several local farms in the area. After working for both Baker’s Garage and Munyon’s Clothing in Oxford, Jerry joined the staff at the Evening Sun newspaper in 1955. He began his career in the circulation department and eventually became a reporter. He retired from the paper in 1982 as the city editor. He was proudly the editor of the farm page for many years after his official retirement.
Jerry was a strong supporter of youth and Agriculture. He was very fond and proud of the various awards he received throughout the years. Among these were Friend of 4H, City of Norwich Youth Service Award, Friend of the Holstein Club Award, Chenango County Soil & Water Conservation District Forestry Award, Ambassador of Agriculture Award, Dairy Promotion Association and Dairy Council “Golden Cow” Award, along with numerous certificates of appreciation from the SPCA. July 16th, 1982 was proclaimed Jerry Weaver Day in the City of Norwich.
On March 19, 1957, in Morris, Jerry married Ruth R. Rice. She died on July 8, 1987. He is survived by his three sons and their wives, Michael and Robyn Weaver of Norwich, William and Martha Smith of Tullos, LA and Gareth and Elaine Weaver of Burkesville, KY; five grandchildren, Ian and Alec Weaver of Norwich, Karen Newsom of Ruston, LA, Rebecca Helton of Alexandria, LA and Michelle Deville of Nebo, LA; four great grandchildren, Karley and Kramer Newsom and Kyra and Eli Deville; one great great grandchild, Charli Deville and a sister, Charlotte Caldwell of Norwich. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by two sisters, Beverly Sprague and Shirley Weaver.
Funeral services for Jerry will be held at 7:00 pm on Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Wilson Funeral Home. Rev. Joseph Connolly, pastor and teacher at the United Church of Christ First Congregational, will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 6:00 pm until the time of the service. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

I remember Jerry so well from my growing up years in Oxford. So sorry to hear of his passing. Often speak of Jerry and siblings.
Sincere condolences to Weaver family. I recall many incidents with Jerry when he was a reporter for the Norwich paper and I was in the Sheriffs Dept- have many articles and pics he took in my scrap book, He was a very good and honest reporter.

His knowledge of life was wonderfully expressed through his reporting and articles addressing the farming industry. He will be missed.
