Unique services for unique individuals

The Wilson Funeral Home owners and staff have an interest in giving back to the community that has given them so much.  As a family-owned and independent funeral home, the owners are able to decide how to invest their time and treasure to benefit the local community based on their intimate knowledge of Norwich.  This independence also enables them to answer the specific needs of each family they serve – rather than to some corporate headquarters based hundreds of miles away. This means you are able to create a service that reflects your life, or the life of your loved one. Whether you are pre-arranging your own funeral, or arranging a funeral after a recent loss, you decide how best to honor your life or the life of your loved one by taking advantage of the knowledge and resources your neighbors at the Wilson Funeral Home provide.

The Wilson Funeral Home, Inc. is owned outright by Douglas and Sharon (Ryan) Wilson, each of whom were born and raised in Norwich, and are graduates of Norwich High School.  After obtaining their college degrees, Doug and Sharon returned to Norwich to raise their daughter, Kelly.  Doug and his father, Pete, who passed away unexpectedly in 1991, have been on call in answering the funeral needs for Norwich families for over 60 years.

Doug and Sharon are passionate about serving the Norwich community.  Doug is a member of the city water board, the board of directors of Chenango County Hospice and Palliative Care, and on the board of the St. Paul’s Cemetery.  He has also served in leadership roles for numerous other local organizations.  Sharon, a recently retired and award-winning Norwich City Schools reading teacher, is a member and past president of the Catholic Charities board of directors, and presently serves on the Norwich Family YMCA board of directors.

John Gawronski, another active Norwich resident, joined the firm in 2010.  John graduated from mortuary school in April 2011 with magna cum laude honors, and passed the national boards exam shortly thereafter.  He is completing his one-year residency at the Wilson Funeral Home, after which he expects to obtain his funeral director license.  John’s wife, Shannon, is a director at the Norwich Family YMCA, and coaches local high school athletic teams.  Their three children — Erin, Gabe, and Katie — are students in the Norwich City Schools.

Also helpful in serving Norwich families for all these years has been Doug’s mother, Dorothy, 92 — a familiar face around Norwich.  Dorothy worked for decades as a nurse in the Norwich City schools.
